The Secret Of Abiding Is Obeying
INTRODUCTION
1. In our examination of the "Secrets Of The Abundant Life," we have
seen thus far...
a. The secret to living is bearing fruit, for in the very act of
bearing fruit we experience the joy, happiness, assurance and
peace which constitutes the "abundant life"
b. The secret to bearing fruit is abiding, for as we "abide in
Christ" (Jn 15:5) He provides the strength which enables us to
bear fruit - cf. Ph 4:13
2. But what is the secret to abiding in Christ? How can we be sure to
have access to the strength that Jesus provides?
I. THE SECRET OF ABIDING
A. THE SECRET OF ABIDING IS OBEYING THE COMMANDS OF JESUS...
1. As stated by Jesus...
a. By keeping His commands we abide in His love - Jn 15:10a
b. By keeping His commands we will be His friends - Jn 15:14
2. And restated by His beloved disciple, John - 1 Jn 3:24a
B. THE PRINCIPLE OF ABIDING THROUGH OBEYING...
1. Governed Jesus' relationship with His Father while on earth
a. He kept His Father's commandments, and so abided in His love
- Jn 15:10b
b. Passages which illustrate Jesus' desire to keep His Father's
Will - Jn 4:34; 5:30; 6:38
2. And should govern our conduct as Christians as well
a. We abide in Christ by keeping His commandments - 1 Jn 2:3-6
b. Otherwise we prove ourselves to be liars if we profess to
know Him and do not keep His word!
II. THE IMPORTANCE OF OBEDIENCE
A. AS STRESSED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT...
1. With the nation of Israel
a. At their beginning as a nation - Deu 10:12,13
b. Later, as the prophets tried to turn them from their
apostasy - Isa 1:18-20
2. With the example of King Saul - 1 Sam 15:22-23
3. As concluded by Solomon in his search for meaning - Ecc 12:13
B. AS STRESSED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT...
1. By Jesus, on several occasions
a. During the sermon on the mount - Mt 7:21-23,24-27; Lk 6:46
b. In describing His true family - Mk 3:31-35
c. In giving the "Great Commission" - Mt 28:18-20
2. By the apostles in their preaching and teaching
a. E.g., the apostle Peter - Ac 10:34,35,48
b. E.g., the apostle Paul - Ac 17:30; Ro 6:17-18
CONCLUSION
1. One cannot read much of God's Word without realizing that obedience
to God's "commands" are essential if we are going to enjoy God's
"blessings!"
2. One verse that expresses this well is He 5:9, where speaking of
Jesus it is said...
"And having been perfected, He became the author of
eternal salvation to all who obey Him,"
3. Have you obeyed the commands of Christ and His apostles? Consider
just a few commands that you must obey if you are going to abide in
Christ, and He in you...
a. Believe on the name of Jesus Christ - 1 Jn 3:23
b. Repent of our sins - Ac 17:30
c. Be baptized - Mt 28:18-19
d. Grow in the knowledge of Christ - 2 Pe 3:18
e. Do not forsake the assembling of ourselves together - He 10:24-25
f. Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly - Co 3:16
g. Devote yourself to prayer - Co 4:2
4. To those who faithfully obey Jesus, to them are given the comforting
words of Re 22:14...
"Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may
have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through
the gates into the city."
The secret to living is bearing fruit;
The secret to bearing fruit is abiding;
The secret to abiding is obeying...
Have you obeyed Jesus?
INTRODUCTION
1. There is a song entitled "Heaven Will Surely Be Worth It All"...
a. Words written by W. Olver Cooper
b. Melody arranged by Minzo C. Jones
In "Hymns For Worship", it is song #253
2. As I sing this song, two main thoughts come to mind...
a. The many sacrifices faithful Christians must often make
b. The glories of heaven and what is to come for those who remain
faithful
3. The song proclaims that the rewards will surely be worth whatever the
cost...
a. As did Paul, in writing to the Romans - Ro 8:18
b. And again, in writing to the Corinthians - 2 Co 4:17
I. THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP
A. JESUS MUST COME FIRST...
1. Before one's own self - Lk 9:23-24
2. Before anyone else, including family - Lk 14:26; Mt 10:34-37
3. Before anything the world has to offer - Lk 9:25; Lk 14:33
B. WE MUST BE WILLING TO SUFFER FOR CHRIST...
1. We must be willing to bear our own cross - Lk 14:27
2. Living in an ungodly world, we may find that following Christ
sometimes involves ridicule and persecution - 2 Ti 3:12
a. The persecution may be physical - 1 Pe 4:12-13
b. The persecution may be verbal - Lk 6:27-28
3. Other things we must endure for Christ's sake:
a. Personal weaknesses in our struggle against sin - 1 Co 9:27
b. Disappointments brought on by failing brethren - 2 Co 11:29
1) E.g., whose apathy and neglect produce slothful service
2) E.g., whose irregular attendance makes it difficult to
depend on them
3) E.g., whose unwillingness to serve creates extra burdens
on those who do serve
4) E.g., whose murmuring hinders the efforts of those who
try to do something
4. Even if blessed to escape such things, we must still be willing
to expend time and effort in promoting the cause of Christ in
positive ways
a. Sometimes alone, or with few to help
b. Sometimes in difficult places, where few appreciate your
efforts
II. THE REWARDS OF DISCIPLESHIP
A. FROM THE PEN OF PAUL...
1. A man who endured much hardship - cf. 2 Co 11:23-25
2. Yet looked forward to:
a. A house not made with hands - 2 Co 5:1
b. The riches of God's grace - Ep 2:7
c. A glorious transformation - Ph 3:20-21
d. A crown of righteousness - 2 Ti 4:8
e. A heavenly kingdom - 2 Ti 4:18
B. FROM THE PEN OF PETER...
1. A man who likewise suffered hardship - cf. 1 Co 4:9-13
2. Yet looked forward to:
a. An inheritance imperishable, undefiled, reserved in heaven
- 1 Pe 1:4
b. A new heavens and new earth, in which righteousness dwells
- 2 Pe 3:13-14
C. FROM THE PEN OF JOHN...
1. A man who suffered tribulation and exile - cf. Re 1:9
2. Yet was blessed to be shown:
a. The bliss of those who were triumphant over tribulation - Re
7:9-10,13-17
b. The destiny of the redeemed, forever with God - Re 21:1-7,
10-11; 21:22-22:5
CONCLUSION
1. Can there be any comparison...?
a. Between a few years of service, even with hardship?
b. And an eternity of bliss in the presence of God?
"Heaven Will Surely Be Worth It All"!
2. We have read the words of those like Paul, Peter, and John...
a. What if they could return and speak to us today?
b. What if our loved ones who died in Christ could return and speak
to us today?
Would they not tell us, "Heaven Will Surely Be Worth It All"?
Whatever the cost of following Jesus in this life, may the words of this
song and the promises of Holy Scripture remind and comfort us to be
faithful and persevere...
"Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.
For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will
of God, you may receive the promise:" (He 10:35-36)

"SECRETS OF THE ABUNDANT LIFE" The Secret Of Obeying Is Loving INTRODUCTION 1. In previous lessons I have endeavored to stress "Secrets Of The Abundant Life" which Jesus offers to His disciples, based upon His discourse in John 15 and related passages... a. The secret of living is bearing fruit b. The secret of bearing fruit is abiding c. The secret of abiding is obeying 2. But what is the secret of obeying? The subtitle makes it clear: "The Secret Of Obeying Is Loving" I. LEVELS OF OBEDIENCE A. THE LEVEL OF "FEAR"... 1. Where we obey because we know what will happen if we don't - cf. Ep 5:5-7 2. Now, there is certainly a place for a proper "fear of the Lord" a. Which can motivate us to initially turn to God - cf. Ac 10: 1-2,34-35 b. Which can continue to motivate us in our service to the Lord - cf. Ph 2:12 c. And which should certainly motivate us to repent when we have disobeyed God - cf. He 10:26-31 3. But the Lord would have us progress beyond fear as the only motive for obedience a. Jesus indicated that He desires our relationship to be much closer and loving - cf. Jn 15:15 1) A "slave-master" relationship is based upon fear 2) But a relationship based upon "friendship" is what Jesus wants b. Fear, while proper in its place, can rob us of the real joy that God wants us to experience when as we obey Him 1) Motivation based solely on fear buildings walls instead of bridges 2) As John wrote: "he who fears has not been made perfect in love" - 1 Jn 4:18 B. THE LEVEL OF "SELFISHNESS"... 1. We obey because of what we know we will get in return 2. This attitude was manifested by Peter on one occasion - cf. Mt 19:27 3. The difference between the level of "fear" and the level of "selfishness" can be easily demonstrated in our children... a. Some children will obey parents to avoid discipline (the level of fear) b. Other children will obey parents to incur favor (the level of selfishness) 4. The sad truth is that many Christians never rise above these two levels of obedience a. Some obey God only because they fear the Judgment b. Others obey God only because of the promise of eternal reward 5. But there is yet a higher level of obedience... C. THE LEVEL OF "LOVE"... 1. This is the highest level of obedience 2. This is where we obey God because we love Him, and will continue to obey Him no matter what the circumstances or outcome will be 3. This is the level of obedience upon which Jesus wants us to do His will... a. "If you love Me, keep My commandments." - Jn 14:15 b. "If anyone loves, Me, he will keep My word..." - Jn 14:23a II. THE SECRET TO OBEYING IS LOVING A. GOD HAS ALWAYS DESIRED THAT HIS PEOPLE OBEY HIM OUT OF LOVE... 1. So He wanted the nation of Israel to obey Him - Deu 6:4-5; 7:9; 10:12-13; 11:1 2. And so Jesus wants His disciples to obey Him - Jn 14:15 B. THE VALUE OF OBEDIENCE OUT OF LOVE CAN BE EASILY SEEN... 1. While we may initially obey out of fear, or out of selfishness... 2. The key to continued and successful obedience requires that it be done out of love! a. Suppose things are going so well for us that we are not mindful of God's impending judgment? - We are not likely to be motivated by "fear" b. Suppose things are going so well for us that we do not sense any need for things from God? - We are not likely to be motivated by "selfishness" 3. Only when we are motivated by "love" will we be faithful in our obedience in good times as well as in bad! CONCLUSION 1. If we desire to truly enjoy the "abundant life" that Jesus offers, then let us learn to obey Jesus out of "love"... a. For the more we love Him, the more we will obey Him b. The more we obey Him, the more we will abide in Him c. The more we abide in Him, the more we will bear fruit d. And the more we bear fruit, the more we will truly experience the "abundant life!" 2. Our next lesson, the final one in this series, will examine the secret to loving For the time being, though, can you say that you love Jesus enough to obey Him...? - Jn 14:15 |
INTRODUCTION
1. In Re 3:1, the church at Sardis was described as a "dead" church...
2. This reveals that churches can die - and they often do...
a. Where are the congregations we read of in the New Testament?
b. At some point in their history, they died
3. There are at least two ways a church may die...
a. It may cease to exist
b. It may die inwardly, even while it still lives outwardly
4. What can kill a church?
a. Are we aware of the different weapons Satan can use to destroy
us?
b. Are there things that threaten our very existence even now?
I. PERSECUTION
A. SATAN HAS OFTEN RESORTED TO PHYSICAL PERSECUTION...
1. E.g., against the church at Smyrna - Re 2:9,10
2. Indeed, he did so against many churches in the first century
- 1 Pe 5:8-9
We should not be surprised if he does so today - 1 Pe 4:12
B. PEOPLE RESPOND TO PERSECUTION DIFFERENTLY...
1. Some are silenced by it - cf. Jn 12:42-43
2. Others rejoice in it - Ac 5:41-42; Ro 5:1-5; Ja 1:2-3
C. HOW WE REACT WILL DETERMINE OUR FUTURE AS A CHURCH...
1. A church that is silenced by persecution will soon die
2. A church that rejoices in persecution will not go unnoticed by
the Lord - Mt 5:11-12
a. As the Lord took note of the church in Pergamos - Re 2:13
b. As the Lord took note of those in Philadelphia - Re 3:8
II. FALSE TEACHING
A. SATAN HAS USED THIS TACTIC TO THREATEN MANY CHURCHES...
1. It threatened the church at Ephesus, but they had overcome
- Re 2:2,6
2. It threatened the church at Pergamos, who while handling
persecution faithfully, they were floundering with error in
their midst - Re 2:13-15
Both Paul and Peter warned of the danger of error - Ac 20:
29-30; 2 Pe 2:1-2
B. TWO THINGS ARE NECESSARY IN GUARDING AGAINST ERROR...
1. We must not turn away from sound doctrine - 2 Ti 4:3-4
a. Sound doctrine involves preaching the word, which includes
both negative ("rebuke") and positive ("exhort") elements
- 2 Ti 4:1-2
b. We must beware of "pop" preaching which simply entertains
rather than instructs
2. We must not support those who teach contrary to the doctrine
of Christ - 2 Jn 9-11
III. WORLDLINESS
A. WORLDLINESS INCLUDES IMMORALITY AND MATERIALISM...
1. Immorality is the lust of the flesh
2. Materialism involves the lust of the eyes
Both are included in "the love of the world"- 1 Jn 2:15-17
B. SATAN USES WORLDLINESS TO DESTROY CHURCHES...
1. E.g., the church at Thyatira was threatened by the influence
of Jezebel - Re 2:20-23
2. Immorality has made havoc of many churches today
3. Materialism has drawn many Christians away from their service
to the Lord
Churches are hindered when their members are rendered
fruitless by worldliness - cf. Lk 8:14
C. TO WARD OFF WORLDLINESS...
1. We must have "the love of the Father" - 1 Jn 2:15-17; cf.
Ja 4:4
2. We must not be conformed to this world, but transformed by the
renewing of our minds - Ro 12:1-2
3. We must "watch and pray" - cf. Lk 21:34-36
IV. INDIFFERENCE
A. A SUBTLE, YET EFFECTIVE WEAPON USED BY SATAN...
1. It jeopardized the standing of the church at Ephesus, who had
left their "first love" - Re 2:4
2. It characterized the church at Laodicea, making it almost
repulsive to Christ - Re 3:15-17
We do not have to oppose the church to kill it, just be
slothful and indifferent! - cf. Pro 18:9; Mt 12:30
B. SYMPTOMS OF INDIFFERENCE...
1. Irregular attendance of services
2. Lack of participation in the services (worship, Bible classes)
3. Consistently arriving late to services
4. Waning efforts to win souls to Christ
5. No personal and private devotions (Bible study and prayers)
C. FERVENT SERVICE IS THE ONLY ANTIDOTE TO INDIFFERENCE...
1. We must not grow weary in doing good - Ga 6:9
2. We must be diligent, and not become sluggish - He 6:11-12
3. We must hold fast the hope we confess by encouraging one
another - He 10:24-25
CONCLUSION
1. While there might be more ways to kill a church, these four are
certainly effective:
a. Persecution
b. False teaching
c. Worldliness
d. Indifference
2. What about this congregation? Is Satan making any progress in
killing us?
a. We might be free from physical persecution, and be known as a
"sound" church
b. But is worldliness and indifference taking its toll?
3. To be forewarned is to be forearmed...
a. We need to be honest with ourselves - are we vulnerable in some
areas?
b. Don't let the Great Deceiver succeed in deceiving us!
May we each do our part in bolstering our defenses against the one who
seeks to destroy us! As Paul wrote:
"lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant
of his devices." (2 Co 2:11)
The Secret Of Loving Is Knowing
INTRODUCTION
1. We come to the final lesson in this series concerning "Secrets Of The
Abundant Life" (cf. Jn 10:10) that Jesus offers
2. In previous lessons we have examined four of these "secrets":
a. The secret of living is bearing fruit - Jn 15:8
b. The secret of bearing fruit is abiding - Jn 15:5
c. The secret of abiding is obeying - Jn 15:10
d. The secret of obeying is loving - Jn 14:15
3. Of course, that leads us to next question: "What is the secret of
loving?"
I. THE SECRET OF LOVING IS KNOWING
A. THIS TRUTH DEMONSTRATED IN HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS...
1. True love between husband and wife is based upon knowledge and
understanding of one another
2. Strong friendships are also based upon knowing each other well
3. Brethren who love one another are those who have made the
effort to know each other
B. SO IT IS IN OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD...
1. The more we come to know God and Jesus, the more we will love
Them!
2. Especially when we grow in our understanding of Their love for
us - cf. Jn 3:16; 1 Jn 3:16
3. Only those who have come to know God have learned to love both
man and God - cf. 1 Jn 4:8
Knowing God, then, is the first major step in the process of living
"the abundant life":
1) By knowing God, we come to love Him
2) By loving Him, we will obey Him
3) By obeying Him, we will abide in Him
4) By abiding in Him, we will bear fruit
5) By bearing fruit, we will experience the joys of abundant living
But before we conclude this series, one last question should be raised:
"How can we come to know God in such a way as to produce this
'chain-reaction' that leads to the abundant life?"
II. THE KEY TO KNOWING GOD
A. WE COME TO KNOW GOD THROUGH COMMUNICATION...
1. Is this not true in our human relationships?
a. Where there is communication, knowledge of one another grows
b. Where there is little or none, relationships flounder
-- And so it is with our relationship with God!
2. Communication with God is a two-street...
a. He speaks to us through the Bible, written by men inspired
by the Spirit of God - cf. 2 Pe 1:21; Jn 16:12-13; 1 Co
14:37
b. And we speak to God through prayer - cf. Ph 4:6-7; 1 Th
5:17-18
3. As simple as it may sound, reading the Bible and praying to God
can be the catalysts starting the "chain-reaction" that will
lead one to experience "the abundant life"
a. The value of God's Word in bearing fruit is described in
Ps 1:1-3
b. The value of prayer to receiving blessings from God was
taught by Jesus in Mt 7:7-11
B. WE ALSO COME TO KNOW GOD THROUGH EXPERIENCE...
1. Sharing experiences with friends and loved ones certainly helps
us to know them better
2. As we go through life, walking with God and Jesus, we will
experience such things as:
a. Their love for us
b. Their strength that is imparted to us
Both of which (love and strength), Paul prayed that the
Ephesians would experience and comprehend - cf. Ep 3:14-21
3. Experiencing such blessings from God will not only help us to
know God better, but to love Him more - e.g., Ps 116:1-2
CONCLUSION
1. What we find, then, is that "the abundant life" can become a self-
perpetuating cycle!
a. For if we are willing to "know God" (by giving Him our minds as
read His Word and pray)...
b. ...then we will "love God" (and give Him our hearts as we learn
of His love for us)
c. Loving God we will then "obey God" (and in so doing, give Him our
wills since we are motivated by love)
d. Obeying God, we will "abide in Him" (and thus benefit from His
strength)
e. Abiding in Him and benefiting by His strength, we will "bear
fruit" (and thereby enjoy the blessings found in the very act of
doing so)
And through the experience of bearing fruit and walking with God,
our knowledge of Him will increase, and the cycle starts all over
again!
2. Why not expose yourself to "the abundant life" that Jesus offers?
a. Give yourself a chance to know God by reading His Word
b. Coming to know God is the most important thing you can do in life
- cf. Jer 9:23-24
1) For to know God is to love Him
2) To love God is to obey Him
3) To obey Him is to abide in Him
4) To abide in Him is to bear fruit for Him
5) To bear fruit is to experience "the abundant life" the Vine
offers to His branches
If you already know of His love for you, but have not yet obeyed His
gospel (cf. Mk 16:15-16; He 5:9), why not do so today?
Haggai 1:1-15
INTRODUCTION
1. About 600 years before Christ, Judah was taken captive to Babylon...
a. Jerusalem with its temple was plundered and burned
b. Seventy years later, the Jews were allowed to return
2. It was the Lord's intention that the Jews rebuild the temple...
a. He stirred up Cyrus of Persia to let them do this - Ezr 1:1-5
b. But once the people returned to Jerusalem, other things began to
take precedence
3. God then sent Haggai to the Jews with a simple message...
a. The message was "Build the temple!"
b. The message has an application for the church today
I. HAGGAI'S MESSAGE TO ISRAEL
A. THE ATTITUDE OF THE JEWS...
1. "The time has not come for the Lord's house to be built" - Hag
1:2
2. Their reasoning can be inferred from Hag 1:3-4
a. They were too busy building their own homes!
b. They put building their own homes before the Lord's house!
3. Their attitude is made clear in Hag 1:9b
a. While the Lord's house lay in ruins...
b. ...every one was concerned with their own home!
B. THE MESSAGE OF HAGGAI...
1. "Is it time to dwell in paneled homes while the temple lies in
ruins?" - Hag 1:4
2. The Lord's challenge: "Consider your ways!" - Hag 1:5
a. Things had not been going well - Hag 1:6
b. They should have been building the temple - Hag 1:7-8
3. Because they had put building their homes before the Lord's
house...
a. They prospered little; what little they had the Lord blew
away - Hag 1:9
b. The Lord even called for a drought in judgment upon them
- Hag 1:10-11
II. HAGGAI'S APPLICATION TO THE CHURCH
A. WE FACE A SIMILAR TASK...
1. Not the building of a physical structure
a. For God does not dwell in temples made with hands - Ac 17:24
b. The temple of God is now the church - cf. 1 Co 1:2; 3:16-17
2. Though a spiritual structure, God's temple is still undergoing
construction
a. The foundation is the work of Jesus, apostles and prophets
- Ep 2:19-22
b. It grows as people are converted by the preaching of the
gospel - 1 Co 3:5-9
c. It grows internally as those converted do their part - Ep 4:
15-16
So we have a similar task to "Build the temple!" (a never-
ending task)
B. HAGGAI'S MESSAGE IS VERY APPLICABLE...
1. Does the Lord's house lie in ruins, while we run to our own
homes?
a. The Lord's house (the church) does lie in ruins if we...
1) Allow other things to keep us from doing our part to
evangelize the lost
2) Neglect to do our part in edifying the body of Christ
b. Whatever our abilities and opportunities, we have a
responsibility in the building of the Lord's house today
1) It may involve teaching or serving - Ro 12:3-8; 1 Pe 4:
10-11
2) It may involve going or sending - Ro 10:14-15
c. Through exercising our abilities we can build the temple of
God today; otherwise the Lord's house will lie in ruins!
2. Is it time to dwell in paneled homes, and let the Lord's house
lie in ruin?
a. Evidently some think so, if they say: "I will serve the
Lord as soon as I..."
1) "...finish my schooling"
2) "...get on top of the responsibilities of my job"
3) "...raise my children"
b. In each case, is not the bottom line the same?
1) The Lord's house lies in ruin
2) While we go about our own way with our own lives
c. In Haggai's day, it was not time to put other things before
the Lord's house; nor is it time to do so today!
1) We must put the kingdom of God first - Mt 6:33
2) We must put the Lord first - Mt 10:37-39
3. Might we need to "consider our ways"?
a. Are things not going the way they should?
1) Perhaps there is a divine reason for the "drought" in our
lives?
2) Perhaps the Lord in His providence is telling us
something!
b. If we will put the Lord and His kingdom (house) first...
1) God will provide our necessities - Mt 6:31-33
2) God will multiply our seed for sowing - 2 Co 9:6-11
c. If we neglect the Lord's work...
1) We won't have God's providence helping us
2) We may even experience God's loving discipline - cf. Hag
1:9-11; 1 Co 11:31-32; He 12:5-11
CONCLUSION
1. We saw that the Jews took to heart the message of Haggai - Hag 1:12
2. What we did not stress was the Lord's response: "I am with you, says
the LORD." (Hag 1:13)
a. The phrase "I am with you" is interesting
b. It is similar to the promise made by Jesus in the Great Commission
- Mt 28:18-20
3. Thus we have the assurance that if we observe all that Christ
commanded...
a. He will be with us always
b. Even as God was with Israel
Yet this blessed assurance is for those who do not let the Lord's house
lie in ruins while they dwell in paneled homes. Are you doing your part
to build the Lord's house?
In The Midst Of A Crooked And Perverse Generation (Ph 2:12-16)
INTRODUCTION
1. A grave concern to any thoughtful Christian is how quickly our
society is changing, and clearly for the worse
2. As some theologians would describe it, we now live in a
"post-Christian culture"
a. This simply means that the old norms once held true are no longer
accepted by the majority
b. For example, people as a majority once believed in God, that the
Bible was the Word of God, and that Jesus was the Son of God; but
such is no longer the case
c. The majority no longer accepts certain basic principles of
morality taught in both the Old and New Testament, even ridiculing
those people who do as "old-fashioned" and "un-enlightened"
3. That we live in a "post-Christian culture" is true both socially and
religiously
a. Socially, in that divorce, remarriage, living together without
marriage, and homosexuality are now commonly accepted as
"alternative lifestyles"
b. Religiously, in that women in the role of church leadership,
homosexual ministers, and various forms of "new age" religions are
now accepted by many
4. How are Christians to react to this change in our society?
a. What can we do to change the direction in which our society is
heading?
1) Should we form "political action committees" and try to change
it using the organizational powers of the church?
2) Should we resort to boycotts, picketing, or other forms of
"economic blackmail"?
3) Should we resort to violence, both verbal and physical, if
necessary?
b. What can we do to protect ourselves, and our children?
1) Should we simply change our views to conform to those of
society?
2) Should we isolate ourselves, or form communes?
5. I believe that the Scriptures provide the correct answer, in a letter
written by Paul to a church which, like many others in New Testament
times, lived in a "PRE-Christian culture"
a. The letter is the Epistle to the Philippians
b. Written to Christians living in city heavily influenced by the
Roman culture, with its paganism, intellectualism, and immorality
c. What Paul wrote to them, is very likely the sort of things he
would write today
d. Especially the things mentioned in Ph 2:12-16
6. This lesson is the first in a series designed to notice carefully
what Paul wrote in this passage
a. Which I believe contains guidance for Christians living "in the
midst of a crooked and perverse generation", whether then or now
b. Providing directions, hope, and warnings which will help us to
"shine as lights in the world"
I. BY WORKING OUT OUR OWN SALVATION FIRST! (12a)
A. AS JESUS PUT IT, "FIRST REMOVE THE PLANK FROM YOUR OWN EYE" - Mt
7:1-6
1. This passage, often misused to prevent any proper judging, is
emphasizing the importance of "getting your own act together
first"
2. Notice, that once you have "removed the plank", you can then
(and should) be used to "remove the speck" in another's eye
B. IF WE ARE NOT CAREFUL, WE MAY LOSE OUR SALVATION IN THE WAY WE
REACT TO OTHERS!
1. Many people go about trying to change society for the better,
using methods that will keep themselves out of the kingdom of
God! - cf. Ga 5:19-21
2. Paul saw the need to be very careful when trying to save others
- cf. 1 Co 9:27
II. WITH "FEAR AND TREMBLING" (12b)
A. THE WORD "FEAR" IN CONNECTION WITH GOD IS NOT POPULAR TODAY...
1. Perhaps a reaction to the "hell, fire and brimstone" preaching
of another generation
2. But could it be that we have gone to the other extreme?
a. Have we diluted the concept of the "fear of the Lord" by our
definitions?
b. To the point there is no place for "trembling" in our
definition of fear?
3. Jesus certainly taught the "fear of the Lord" - Mt 10:28
B. THE NEED TO HAVE PROPER "FEAR AND TREMBLING"...
1. Without it, it is unlikely we will seriously make the effort to
"work out our own salvation"
2. Could this be a reason there is so much apathy and
fruitlessness in the church today?
III. BY LETTING GOD WORK IN US (13)
A. TO SUCCEED AS "LIGHTS IN THE WORLD"...
1. It will be essential to let God do His work, something He is
able to do beyond our ability to comprehend - Ep 3:20-21
2. He is there "working in you"! - cf. Ph 1:6
3. How? Both...
a. To "will" - helping us in our motivation
b. To "do" - helping us in our ability
B. BUT IF WE ARE NOT CAREFUL, WE CAN EASILY...
1. Quench God's efforts to work in us
2. Prevent God from using us altogether (at least for doing things
for our own good)!
IV. WITHOUT MURMURING AND DISPUTING (14)
A. BY MAINTAINING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE...
1. Living in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation can
easily get us down, where we can become constant complainers
2. But allowing that to happen will render us less effective
3. And as with Israel, "murmuring" can lead to our own downfall
- 1 Co 10:10-12
B. BY GETTING ALONG WITH YOUR BRETHREN...
1. Unity among brethren is extremely important as we try to
convince the world concerning Jesus - Jn 17:20-23
2. Disputing with one another simply reveals we have some growing
up to do! - 1 Co 3:1-4
V. AS CHILDREN OF GOD WITHOUT FAULT (15)
A. WHICH REQUIRES US TO BECOME "BLAMELESS"...
1. Not that we are perfect, but like elders are to be blameless,
we are to be "above reproach"
a. We may be sinners, but we quickly confess our sins and make
amends when it is called for
b. We should live in such a way that we have no "outstanding
faults" that are clearly evident to others
2. Nothing hinders our ability to "shine as lights" like
inconsistency and hypocrisy, especially that which is evident
to all!
B. IT ALSO REQUIRES US TO BE "HARMLESS"...
1. Though we may firmly oppose sin in all forms, sinners should
never fear bodily harm from us! - again cf. 2 Ti 2:24-26
2. Sadly, many so-called "Christians" appear to be using "Old
Covenant" methods in their efforts to change others, and come
across as likely to produce great bodily harm!
3. But as Jesus said, we are to be "wise as serpents and harmless
as doves" - Mt 10:16
VI. HOLDING FAST THE WORD OF LIFE (16)
A. REMEMBER, THE WORD OF GOD IS THE "SWORD OF THE SPIRIT"!
1. It is the ONLY "offensive weapon" we have in the armor of God
- Ep 6:10-17
2. It is the instrument by which the Spirit convicts the world of
sin, produces repentance and brings about the new birth - cf.
Ja 1:18; 1 Pe 1:23; Ro 1:16
3. Thus it is truly the "word of life"!
B. WE MUST BOTH "HOLD FAST" AND "HOLD FORTH" THIS POWERFUL WORD!
1. Some translations say "hold fast", others "hold forth"
2. Both are called for, as we should:
a. "Hold fast" the word in our own study and application
b. "Hold forth" the word as we proclaim it to those we are
trying to change
3. In this, we would do well to follow the example of Ezra, and
the order in which he applied himself - cf. Ezra 7:10
a. To first "seek the Law of the Lord"
b. Then "to do it"
c. Finally, "to teach" others
CONCLUSION
1. In these verses, then, I believe we find the way Christians are to
"shine as lights in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation"
2. It involves...
a. Working out our own salvation
b. With fear and trembling
c. By letting God work in us
d. Doing things without murmuring and disputing
e. As children of God without fault
f. Holding fast the word of life
3. If our ultimate objective is not just changing legislation, but the
hearts of men to the ways of God, then this is how we can do it!
4. And this is how we will "rejoice in the day of Christ" -- and know
that our own labor will not be in vain! - cf. Ph 2:16
We will expand upon these thoughts in succeeding lessons; but for now,
have you given serious thoughts as to how YOU shine in the world...?
INTRODUCTION
1. Our songs in worship are designed to instruct as well as praise...
a. For in them we teach and admonish one another - Co 3:16
b. By them the Word of Christ can dwell in us richly - Co 3:16
2. A familiar song with an important message is "Take Time To Be
Holy"...
a. Words written by W. D. Longstaff
b. Music composed by George C. Stebbins
In "Hymns For Worship", it is song #118
3. Certainly the children of God are to be holy...
a. We are to be holy in our conduct - 1 Pe 1:15
b. Even as our Father who calls us is holy - 1 Pe 1:15-16
Indeed, holiness is to be pursued, for without it one will not see
the Lord - He 12:14
I. THE NEED TO TAKE TIME
A. THE WORLD RUSHES ON...
1. As expressed in the beginning of the second verse
2. Our lives are certainly hectic and fast-paced
3. Filled with activities that consume our time
4. And our lives are but a vapor - cf. Ja 4:13-14
Before we know it, time will have slipped by
B. IT TAKES TIME TO BE HOLY...
1. The key presumption upon which this song is based
2. Holiness must be pursued - He 12:14
3. Holiness is the fruit of service to God - cf. Ro 6:22
4. Holiness must be perfected - 2 Co 7:1
If we are not careful, time to develop holiness will be gone
II. THE WAY TO TAKE TIME
A. SPEND TIME WITH THE LORD...
1. The song encourages us to:
a. "Abide in Him always"
b. "Spend much time in secret with Jesus alone"
2. The means to do so involve:
a. Prayer, as suggested by the song
1) "Speak oft with thy Lord"
2) "Forgetting in nothing His blessings to seek"
b. The Word of God ("Feed on His Word")
3. Do we take time to be with the Lord?
a. Through prayer, where the Lord is ready to intercede? - cf.
He 4:14-16; 7:25
b. Through the Word, which testifies of our gracious Lord?
- cf. Jn 5:39; 1 Pe 2:2-3
We cannot overestimate the importance of finding time to be
with the Lord alone through prayer and the Word!
B. SPEND TIME WITH OTHERS...
1. This includes fellowship with other Christians ("Make friends
of God's children")
a. Which the early Christians continued in steadfastly - Ac
2:42
b. Which helps to ensure faithfulness and steadfastness - He
3:12-14
c. Which includes the idea of frequent assembling - He 10:24-25
2. This includes service to our fellowman ("Help those who are
weak")
a. A duty enjoined upon Christians - 1 Th 5:14-15; Ac 20:35
b. Service toward all, but especially our brethren - Ga 6:10
c. Ministering our abilities to one another - 1 Pe 4:10-11
We must not be so busy that we don't have time to be with
brethren and to help others as we have opportunity!
III. THE BENEFITS OF TAKING TIME
A. YOU WILL BE BLESSED...
1. With inner peace and happiness ("Be calm in thy soul")
a. Through frequent prayer - cf. Ph 4:6-7
b. Through frequent meditation upon the Word - cf. Psa 1:1-3;
119:165
2. With renewed strength ("Each thought and each motive beneath
His control")
a. Through your relationship with Christ - Ph 4:13
b. Through the indwelling of the Spirit - Ro 8:12-13; Ep 3:16,
20-21
3. With increasing realization of God's love ("Led by His Spirit
to fountains of love")
a. A manifestation of the Spirit in our lives - Ro 5:5
b. Whose fruit produces love - Ga 5:22
Is this not sufficient motivation to "take time to be holy"?
B. YOU WILL BE MORE CHRIST-LIKE...
1. The ultimate goal of discipleship ("Like Him thou shalt be")
a. As explained by Jesus - Lk 6:40
b. As foreordained by God - Ro 8:29
2. A transformation noticed by others ("Thy friends in thy conduct
His likeness shall see")
a. The result of spending time with Jesus - e.g., Peter and
John, Ac 4:13
b. The result of giving yourself to such things - e.g.,
Timothy, 1 Ti 4:15
3. Prepared for greater service ("Thou soon shall be fitted for
service above")
a. For we will serve God in heaven, and in the new Jerusalem
- Re 7:15; 22:3
b. Indeed, we will reign with Christ and God forever! - Re
22:5; 2 Ti 2:12
Is this not even more motivation to "take time to be holy"?
CONCLUSION
1. Remember the need to take time...
a. The world rushes on, and would carry us along with it
b. Our time in this life is short, we must have our priorities
straight
2. Are you taking time, indeed, making time...?
a. To spend time alone with God, in prayer and the Word?
b. To spend time with others, in fellowship and service?
3. We must take time, if we desire to...
a. Experience the blessed life Jesus offers
b. Become more Christ-like in our conduct
May this song ("Take Time To Be Holy") always remind us of the need to
slow down, and to do those things so crucial to our spiritual growth and
happiness!
Have you taken the time to respond to the gospel of Christ...? - cf. Mk
16:15-16; Ac 2:38
